Burscough Junction is one of two railway stations serving the small West Lancashire town of Burscough in the north-west of England. The Liverpool, Ormskirk and Preston Railway Company received parliamentary authorisation to build the line on the 18th August 1846. At this stage the East Lancashire Railway aquired the company and responsibility for the construction of the new line. It accepted a tender from McKenzie, Brassey and Stephenson for £200,698 on the 20th January 1847 and the first sod was cut near Maghull on 16th March that year. Construction proved more difficult than anticipated especially with the embankments disappearing into the moss! As a result the hoped for completion date was not met. The line was finally completed by March 1849 and after inspections was opened to the public a few weeks later on 2nd April.
By 1904 the station was catering for passenger and goods traffic, horse boxes, prize cattle vans, furniture vans, and livestock. A five ton crane was available in the large goods yard which also contained no less than seven private sidings. The sidings reflected the local industry, namely Abbey Mill, Ainscough, Birchfield, Brickfield, Burscough Abbey, Royal Army Ordnance Corps, and Platts. The station was to see over 100 trains per day by 1914. 1908 trackplan showing sidings and associated industries. Photo : National Library of Scotland - Mapping
Today the station consists of a single platform with basic shelters and a long-line public address system. There are ticket machines which require card, passengers paying cash must do so on the train. The land once occupied by the goods yard is now a housing development. Northern Rail operates a Monday-Saturday service with some northbound services extending to Blackpool South. There is no Sunday service. A proactive Friends of Station group working with the train operator helps to keep the station and its environs tidy and litter free, their colourful flower displays admired by passengers.
