Following on from our article on the real location, we explore Burscough Bridge as a possible model railway layout. The track plan is based loosely on that of the original station layout that existed well into the 1970's. Our full description of the real station can be found HERE. With a scenic section of 16' x 3' (OO Gauge), the layout could be produced as fiddle yard - terminus or a through station with fiddle yards (or tail-chasing loop) at each end. The platform lengths are almost prototypical but there is considerable compression between the station and crossing at Crabtree Lane (almost 50%). The main line cross-over was did not exist in reality and has been included for operational interest and flexibility. The sidings themselves are slightly shorter than would be to scale length although will still accommodate reasonable length goods trains with plenty of shunting possibilities. The only sidings omitted from the plan are those that once served the mill at Mart Lane. On that note, Mart Lane is considerably further away in reality. Today, the site of the mills is occupied by a large supermarket. This area was compressed on the plan to keep the baseboard width sensible but could easily be included by those who model smaller scales. It is perhaps worth noting that the station approach road would be next to the supermarket and not Mart Lane if that area was modelled.
