With just 5 examples produced, the design specification (Drawing DM/101/1) called for a light weight diesel mechanical shunter for areas with tight curves and limited clearances.
A fifth locomotive was manufactured in 1958 for departmental working, with the unusual identifier No.81, but was re-allocated D2956 in July 1967 after the original D2956 had been withdrawn. Only two examples of the type survived long enough to enter the British Rail TOPS system. Despite their diminutive size and Gardner 6 cylinder 6L3 engine producing a modest 153hp (114 kW), which ultimately was reduced to 102hp (76kW) at the rail, the Class 01's were able to operate on all parts of the standard gauge network and had an exceptional reliability record. The route availability for the type was limited only by its maximum top speed of 14.25mph (22.9 km/h). Their light weight of 25.5 tons made them ideal for use on the light railway systems of London's docklands where they originally worked.
As shipping, and consequently rail, traffic at the docks declined, the 2 remaining members of the class to have survived into British Rail service were transferred to the Holyhead Breakwater railway in Anglesey (North Wales) in 1967. By this time the locomotives had received a Total Operations Processing System (TOPS) alloction; being renumbered 01001 (D2954) and 01002 (D2955) respectively. Neither locomotive was to see the Corporate Blue livery applied. Both retained the original British Railways black, black-and-yellow "wasp stripe" warning front and rear, and "unicycling lion" emblem; they were the last locomotives in BR service to do so.
service in 1973 and became a source of spare parts. 01002 continued to operate on the line for maintenance purposes until the Breakwater Railway finally closed in July 1980. Neither of these locomotives survived, both being cut up on site. D2953 is at the Heritage Shunters Trust in the later green livery, and D2956 in original black at the East Lancashire Railway.
